Module 5 Discussion Board

Discussion Prompt:

Kristi has been the nurse manager of a 30-bed medical unit for 7 months. She was a patient safety coordinaator for two years before she became a nurse manager. Kristi is a visionary leader and her intent is for the unit to become a unit that consistently provides high qualtiy care.
After reviewing the most recent report of the quality performance of her unit, she realizes that despite the slight improvements that occurred in the last quarter; several quality indicators are still below goal. There have been 3 CAUTI’s on the unit in 2 months, and the unit’s HCAHPS scores have declined slightly.

Prior to Kristi accepting the position as a clinical manager, the unit experienced an 18% RN turnover. All but four (4) of the budgeted RN positions have been backfilled. However, none of the newly hired nurses participated in the Quality and Patient Experience training that was provided nearly 9 months ago.

Kristi has drafted an action plan to improve the quality on her unit. She asks you to assist her in drafting the rationale she can use to defend three of the requests she has included in her Action Plan when she discusses the Plan with her director, CNO, COO, and VP of Finance.
Students must provide a substantive response that justifies the three elements included in Kristi’s Action Plan that follows.

Request #1:
CNO to round on the unit with the Clinical Manager (Kristi) and the Director at least 2X/month.

Request #2:
Request to backfill the remaining 4 vacant positions (1 on days; 3 on nights) within 30 days or less
