The purpose of this assignment is to become familiar with a variety of methodologies used to teach English as a second language. The popularity of some of these methodologies has ebbed and flowed over time. However, it is important to be familiar with the hallmarks of each, as well as their benefits and drawback for different types of audiences.
Language teaching methodologies that you will explore:
1. The Audiolingual Method
2. Total Physical Response
3. The Silent Way
4. Suggestopedia
5. Competency-based Language Teaching
6. The Natural Approach
7. Content-based Instruction
8. Sheltered English instruction
9. Communicative Language Teaching
Use traditional and online academic resources to find the information you need. When using online resources, be certain they are high quality. The STU Libraries would be an excellent place to start.
For each of the language methodologies listed above:
• Give a brief description of how to implement it
• Tell what type of English language learner (younger/older; beginning proficiency/advanced proficiency; formal L1 schooling/limited L1 schooling, etc) would benefit most from it
• Describe drawbacks or shortcomings of the methodology
• Present your information in a table with short descriptions and bulleted statements, as needed. [you submit the table; there is no narrative]
