For this third and final assignment, I am asking you to write a brief essay on the ethics of food.
Do you believe that it is morally permissible to use animals for food? Defend your position with reasons.
The purpose of this assignment is to see that you know how to defend a moral position with reasons. It is essential, then, that you present a well-constructed argument for your position. In doing this, you can draw on information presented in your book or by James Wildman in his lecture “The Food Matrix.”
To receive full credit for this assignment, please follow the instructions below.
1. Your essay should be no less than 200 words and no more than 300 words. This is a short essay, so be concise and to the point.
2. Directly address the essay question, as explained above. In defending your position, it is important that you avoid logical fallacies, particularly fallacies that we have studied in this course (see Study Guide 4). Make sure you state a well-constructed argument for your position. A well-constructed argument has premises, a conclusion, and a valid logical form. (The list of argument patterns in Study Guide 3 is far from exhaustive. An argument can have a valid logical form even though it does not fit one of those patterns. So, the argument you give need not fit one of those patterns, but it must be valid.)
3. Demonstrate that you can write at a college level. You should write in standard English, using correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and paragraph construction.
