Sport and performance psychology practitioners spend a great of deal time helping clients address obstacles. Many of those issues are brought about from social issues. Regardless, not all obstacles are bad. Many times, an obstacle provides the performer with the intrinsic and/or extrinsic motivation needed. In some cases, extrinsics can be modified or changed (such as environment), but intrinsics deal with the cognitive (and emotions) and tend to take a greater amount of work to address.
For this week’s assignment I want you to grow in your ability to help your clients address his or her obstacle(s) and help them see how the obstacle (social issue) can be used for positive intrinsic motivation. Locate a minimum of two obstacles (Chapters 12-14 within the textbook) within society that you would like to learn more in an effort to help your client.
Writing Requirements
You are required to write a minimum of a 3 paragraph summary for each obstacle you chose, with an additional 1 page that identifies and defends your use of such strategies (psychological practices) you plan to use with your client. Within each summary you will want to discuss the following:
– Identify the obstacle (social issue from textbook).
– How does this obstacle affect your client’s adherence to continue to perform?
– What is the theory that addresses, or will be utilized, for this obstacle (recall theories from week three)?
– Many social issues can present stressors, thus become obstacles to our motivation. What cognitive practices might you use, or suggest, to help your client overcome his or her obstacles?
You must cite and reference a minimum of two peer-reviewed sources. The textbook may count as one. You will need to find other non-Internet peer-reviewed sources. I recommend looking on Ebsco or Proquest for great peer-reviewed sources. You can also reference the back of the text for the author’s sources.
Be sure to use the lecture, book, and peer-reviewed sources to defend your stance on the topic. All written submissions should reflect current APA formatting, professionalism in grammar, spelling, writing style/format (one-inch margins, double spaced, typed in 12-point Times New Roman font), include APA citations when appropriate, an appropriate APA title page, and be uploaded as .doc or .docx documents. The expectation at the graduate level is that you will write like a graduate-level student.
The obstacles I want covered are Media coverage of womens sports and barriers for women in sport as well as social class in sport.
