Book- Citizen – An American Lyric by Claudia Rankine
This part of the paper is (PART I – VI)
Purpose: Explore appeals to rhetorical appeals found in our novel. This assignment gets students looking rhetorically at the novel and reflecting critically on the reading.
Looking at this week’s reading from Rankine’s Citizen and what we’ve learned about microaggressions and rhetorical appeals, you are to identify what her argument is and discuss at least 1 rhetorical appeal (ethos, pathos, logos, or kairos) you have found in the novel so far. Point us to the scene (provide a quote) and discuss how Rankine is using the rhetorical appeal in the scene to make her argument. Why did you choose this example? What is Rankine’s purpose in providing it for her readers? Consider developing your points further to discuss the ways in which microaggressions may/may not have changed since Rankine published her book in 2014.
***NOTE: The microaggressions that you find do not need to be limited to Black people of color. They can be women, women of color, LGBTQ*, people of color, etc..
