Scenario: A new family to the United States has just enrolled in your school. The family has little to no English skills, but does have a “sponsor” who does speak English who has been active in the registration/enrollment process. One of the three children has been placed in your classroom and is at the pre-emergent/emergent level. Utilizing the information you have learned throughout the course, address how you will approach the family and student regarding a plan for instruction.

1. “Approach to Communication with the Family” – How will you initially establish communication with the family to share the information below? What resources can you utilize to ensure the communication is effective?

3. Effective Use of Assessment – As the classroom teacher, how will you assess or know what prior learning/knowledge the student does bring to the classroom?
4. Curriculum Approaches to ELP – As the classroom teacher, what ELP standards could you incorporate into your lesson plans in order to differentiate your instruction and make accommodations for the pre-emergent/emergent level student? What types of activities can the family expect that the student will be required to do? What will your approach be? How does having this student in the pre-emergent/emergent level affect how you would approach reading, writing, and comprehension for this student in your classroom?
5. Curriculum Approaches to Vocabulary – describe to the family your approach to vocabulary development, provide examples of the strategies you will use and the expected outcomes for the student.
6. Questions – What questions could you ask throughout your conversation with the family to encourage collaboration, a sense of security, and to build trust? Provide 3-5 questions.
