The Beggar’s Opera blends sentiment and satire. Polly’s role is a glamorously romantic one as she naively clings to her belief and trust in her handsome, ne’er-do-well lover. The deft manner, with which one mood ironically offsets the other, so that neither ever dominates, is one of the root sources of the opera’s enduring popularity.
