Consider this example of the Hyatt Regency Hotels as it relates to vision.
The corporate vision statement for Hyatt Hotels is to “seek to provide authentic hospitality by making a difference in the lives they touch each day.” The company’s goal, then, is to become the preferred brand.” But Hyatt’s visioning does not stop there. The Hyatt Regency is unique in that there is a path of vision statements from the corporate level to individual Hyatt employees. Each level of vision statements parallels the corporate one, explaining how an individual hotel will fulfill the corporate vision statement, how each department within the hotel will help fulfill the individual hotel’s vision statement, and how each individual’s vision statement contributes to the department’s vision statement.
Use this example and what you have learned about vision and mission to create a chain of statements for your organization or an organization of your choice.
Locate the organization’s vision and mission statements. If your department or program does not have vision and mission statements, write them. Gather input from coworkers, and revise. Then write your own personal vision and mission statements.
How well does the chain of vision statements align? What areas differ? What areas are the same?
