Gaps in literature represent the missing pieces in the research literature and they also represent those areas that are yet to be explored or are under explored. A literature review enables the researcher to identify the existing gaps in the literature and to focus on advancing the research to help feel such gaps. Finding the research gaps and having means that will help develop a complete and sustained study on the gaps can be rewarding for the researcher and its new findings can positively impact our whole society (Evensen et al., 2020). Towards identifying the existing gaps in literature, it is important to conduct thorough review of existing literature in both the broad and specific areas of the research topic.
After reviewing the literature for my evaluation plan and the different types of evidence for my evidence-based practice project the gaps in the findings that I encounter are on the types of exercises that older patients with type 2 diabetes should indulge and the intensity of such exercise. Many of the evidences focused on light physical exercises such as jogging, walking, and running with minimal focus on intensity exercise such as running, hiking, and cycling (Esmaeili et al., 2022). Another gap is on the relationship between lack of adherence to physical exercise in relation to blood glucose levels in diabetic patients that are not obese or overweight. There is lack of adequate information of whether the two interventions need to be implemented together or they can be interchanged depending on the patient’s condition. Another gap in the literature is on the need for establishing diabetic patients’ different situations, behaviors, and needs before establishing the effective treatment plan. The gaps could influence other researchers to indulge in conducting research in order to fill the existing gaps.
