Ethics Scenario
A 25-year-old patient was critically injured in a motorcycle accident. Following his admission to the ICU, he was declared dead by neurologic criteria (brain dead). The patient had expressed his desire to be an organ donor on his driving license. However, when the organ procurement team approached the family, the family expressed hesitance to donate their son’s organs despite their son’s expressed wishes. The nurse caring for the patient has a loved one whose life was saved by organ donation, and as an avid supporter of organ donation, the nurse does not understand the family’s position. When the nurse’s shift is over she makes an appointment to discuss the situation with the ICU director who is the healthcare administrator in charge for the day.
