The U.S. was founded with the idea that all people are created equal and that it could be a haven for people from all over the world looking to forge a better life. As time has progressed, the topic of immigrants coming to the U.S. in recent times has become a heated political topic, with fifty-two percent of registered voters, according to PEW research, saying that this issue will impact their vote (Pew Research Center 2020). Regarding immigration in the U.S., we will primarily focus on the southern border because, in the Fiscal year of 2022, CBP stopped more than 2,766,582 migrants trying to illegally cross the border into the U.S. (Ainsley, 2022). Approximately 11 million Mexican immigrants have been living illegally in the U.S. since 2015; it is likely much higher now (Lessem, 2018). After reading an article from The University of Akron, I believe that regarding the charge that immigrants flooding the labor market and driving down wages in the U.S. is that there are no significant negative effects on wages in the U.S. . The reasoning behind this decision is that when there is a large flood of immigrants into the labor market, they are most likely low-skilled workers who are entering the U.S. due to a shortage of workers in a particular market (Desai, 2020). Also another reason they are immigrating is due to the fact they are being paid more in the U.S. than in their country of origin. For instance, Mexico has a minimum wage per day of $8.88; in border areas, it is as high as $13.33 per day, which ends up being significantly lower than the U.S. minimum wage of $7.25 per hour, with most workers working 8-hour shifts a day resulting in higher pay (Mexperience, 2022). However, this problem of large amounts of illegal immigrants does have a chance for several long-term negative effects, such as immigrants sending their money home to their families and not spending it here in the U.S. and social programs and welfare. Some positives can offset these negatives, such as the economic benefit generated from immigrants’ jobs. If they stay longer in the U.S., they might even pay taxes paying back into social and welfare programs.
