Each response should be at least one paragraph and be supported by passages from the book (textual evidence).
1. Throughout the play, Troy is intent on building a fence around his house while being discussed by some of the other characters. What do you think the fence signifies?
2. Looking back at last week’s lecture on tragedy, what makes Troy a tragic character? Do you think any of the other characters in the story are tragic as well? Why or why not?
3. What is the significance of the religious motifs throughout the play. For instance, consider Troy’s brother Gabriel and Troy’s anecdotes about his encounters with death and the devil. What point might playwright August Wilson be making?
