General Information:
In this activity, you will use the New York State Regents Thematic Essay Scoring guide found in this weeks resources to score six (6) sample essays. The scoring guide contains a sample essay (formally known as an anchor) with a response and conclusion about why the essay was scored as it was. Essays are scored on a scale of zero to five (0-5) based on the rubric in the scoring guide.
There will be two parts to this activity that you will submit as one full document.
Part 1:
For each of the six essays, you should prepare a short response (at least one to two paragraphs for each essay) as well as assign a score of 0-5.
*** Please explain how the essay did or did not meet the criteria of the rubric and cite examples from the essay to support your conclusions.
Part 2:
Prepare a reflective essay on the process as a whole:
What was your impression of the quality of the students’ work?
What was effective or not about the rubric?
Why do you feel the rubric was developed with this set of criteria?
Do you feel there were any criterion that would have been different if this was a take home exam versus it being timed in-person?
Was the sample essay and score/rationale (on the last page of the PDF file) helpful as a guide/anchor?
What is essential for an instructor to do when engaging with rubrics that they did not write themselves? What did you do that helped your process that you think could be a best practice or policy for others?
