Prompt:
Thesis: How is Modern Science Platonic?
Choose one example of a modern scientific rehabilitation of Platonic philosophy of nature. Make sure your discussion involves both of the following:
(a) Re: the Simile of the Line in the Republic Book VI, discuss how your example of modern science reflects the divisions within the line.
and
Re: the Timaeus, discuss how your example of modern science reflects the way Plato depicts ‘physical’ objects (e.g., objects made of earth, air, fire, and water) as fundamentally ‘conceptual’ (mathematical/geometrical) objects.
Examples might include:
The idea of ‘real’ conceptual-mathematical ‘objects’ in modern physics and cosmology
The quest for ‘artificial intelligence’ in which ‘mind’ is reduced to objective mathematical-conceptual structures
In science more generally—including the ‘soft’ sciences of psychology, sociology, anthropology, etc.—the ways in which the mathematical-conceptual structure of scientific models often does more than merely ‘represent’ the physical objects studied (i.e., sometimes the physical objects studied are ‘actually’ reducedto the mathematical-conceptual structure of the model).
These are only a few examples. You are encouraged to think of your own as well!
