1. We learned that Google, Amazon, and Facebook were “pioneers” in designing capitalist surveillance tools within their domain. As our readings showed, there are both political economic and cultural consequences to the rise of these giants. Choose one of these companies and demonstrate how it was able to grow, implement its measures of capitalist surveillance, and what that has meant for society on a cultural level (identify what is political economy vs, cultural). Minimum 1.5 pages.
2. Lateral and self-surveillance have become an everyday practices that we engage as part of protecting ourselves, better positioning ourselves on the job market, finding community, and managing our health. We are socialized by work, family, school, and university to anticipate surveillance. What are the forms of imagined surveillance that are most prominent today? Anchoring your arguments in our readings, choose a hypothetical individual (age/gender identity/race/ethnicity/education determined by you for instance 20 year, CIS female, White, college student) and the types of imagined surveillance and what pitfalls they may fall into (offer them advice). 1.5 page minimum.
