Option 1: The framers of the Constitution were concerned that everyday citizens would not be able to understand or comprehend the makings of our government. They felt that everyday citizens were uninformed and did not care what was going on in our government. Even today we see where citizens are interested in government affairs seemingly only if our country is in turmoil such as unemployment, recessions, civil unrest, etc. Do you agree with this assessment? Are we uninformed? Do we wait till a crisis happens to voice our opinions?
It is a valid concern that the framers of the Constitution had regarding everyday citizens not being able to understand or comprehend the makings of the government. I am not proud and quite ashamed actually to admit that I, myself, am among of many people who feel that way. Unfortunately, when it comes to politics, I have absolutely no idea what is going on most of the time. That is why there is a saying that ignorance is bliss. However, it is not so much of a bliss when we are not acting on our rights to vote and make decisions that will affect our generation and the generations after us, especially since a democracy is supposed to be “about the rule of the people” (Greenberg & Page, 2018). Being uninformed and careless will get us as humanity only so far. We see it with people all the time, where it is almost part of our human nature to not really be concerned about what is going on with our government or the world until it affects us personally in some way. Only then are we interested in what has been occurring. At the same time, I believe that it is worth mentioning how with technology playing such a powerful role in our lives today, it is so crucial to also understand that disinformation, misinformation, and fake news can skew the truth and mislead people in many ways (Lecheler & Egelhofer, 2022). Ultimately, I completely agree with this assessment and admit that we are uninformed as citizens, and we definitely should not be waiting for a crisis to occur in order for us to voice our opinions because once it becomes a crisis then it may be too late to take any action anymore at that point. It is our duty as citizens to gather information from reputable sources for our own knowledge and to make educated decisions for the country that we are a part of as its citizens.
