The following PICOT was developed in NUR 550, In school age children, including those in early childhood programs and kindergarten through 12th grade (P), would mandating Covid vaccines in schools (I), when compared to not enforcing a mandate (C) lead to a decrease in the spread of the virus amongst this population, and the likelihood of a school closure (O), if children are required to be vaccinated by the end of the 2nd week in school (T)?
There is no way to tell how ill a child will become after contracting Covid, but those with underlying health conditions are at risk for more severe symptoms (CDC, 2022). The proposed intervention would mandate that all school age children returning to school receive at least their first of two vaccines before returning in the Fall. Families will receive information on local vaccination clinics, and access to a Covid vaccination hotline for questions. Of course, all information will be provided in multiple languages for families that speak English as a second language, ensuring that everyone has access to important information about the virus, and access to vaccines.
The intervention would support vulnerable populations, as vaccines allow us to feel safe from communicable disease where we work, learn and play (Gostin, 2021). The vaccine should be treated as another layer of protection for our communities. My role as an advanced practice nurse would be to serve as a resource to the community and provide parents with current information on vaccines for children, including benefits, and expected outcomes.
