Directions: Write (type) a discussion concerning the presented scenario. Be sure to number and carefully address each item.
Dr. Melvin Yesteryear, an industrial psychologist, needs to select information operators (411) for the telephone company. Dr. Ross’s test consists of 50 names orally presented during 15 minutes of testing (HINT: Seems like you would have to be very fast to do that many names in only 15 minutes) The examines must look up the number in a computerized telephone directory, and either write the number down or report that there is no such person listed. Upon finishing each name, the next name is stated. Dr. Ross records how many numbers the applicant records correctly in the allotted time.
Given the scenario described, how would you classify the “type of test” employed by Dr. Yesteryear.
How would you recommend establishing the reliability of this test? Why did you choose the method you did (hint: note your answer to #1 above)? Why or why not other methods?
How would you establish the validity of the test? Why did you choose the method you did? Why or why not other methods?
What procedures would you use to select applicants on the basis of this test? What do you think the base -rate for this type of job might be? Does it matter? How would your procedures differ if the test had a low validity coefficient?
What type of item analysis procedures would be appropriate for this test? What would you want to know about the items on this test? (That is, what type of item would make for a good or a bad item on this test)?
