The state of Colorado passed many legislation changes in the last few years since the Covid-19 pandemic started to improve healthcare. Currently in the state of Colorado legislators passed SB 175 which sets up a Prescriiption Drug Affordability Board to review the cost of certain drugs and establish upper payment limits (Gilbert, 2021). Legislators established HB 1307 and formulated ways to make insulin more affordable for people with diabetes. Legislators allowed Colorado to import drugs from countries other than Canada to make drugs more accessible when the federal government allows it (SB 123). Legislation improved the bill HB 1232 which attempts to drive down health care costs in Colorado. It directs the Division of Insurance to create a standardized health insurance plan to be offered by all private insurers. It requires insurers to reduce premium prices for the standardized plan by 15% by 2025 (Gilbert, 2021). This would push providers to accept rates set by state regulators if needed to meet the specified premium reductions. As a future practitioner this would mean that access to medications would be more accessible to patients when prescribing medications to diagnose and treat. This also means that patients would have more options to obtain insurance at lower costs and be covered medically. This would encourage patients to seek treatment and follow-up with recommended treatment plans initiated by providers. As a future practitioner I want to advocate for easier access to healthcare treatments and medications for patients. Supporting patients to enhance their overall well-being is essential and requires the ability to obtain affordable health care insurance options.
