Postpartum and maternal nursing care will support mothers transitioning into their new maternal role. According to the Maternal Role Attainment (MRA) theory formulated by Ramona Mercer, it can take up to four months for a new mother to fully integrate her new role into her identity (Frese & Nguyen, 2022). Providing more support services to mothers during this transition will also improve mother and infant breastfeeding duration rates since mothers will have greater access to information, specialty providers, and a motherhood community that can assist in the role transition and their breastfeeding journey.

Qualitative and quantitative studies can both be performed to investigate the correlation between the level of support a mother receives and how they have transitioned into their maternal role, including their breastfeeding outcomes. In a qualitative study, an in-depth interview can be performed with mothers when they are four months postpartum, asking questions regarding how much support they were provided, what support services they utilized, and if they felt their support needs were met. The benefit of this method is that the interviewer can read and report on the participant’s body language and if they appear comfortable and confident in their answers. Questions can also be given out in the form of an open-ended survey. An open-ended survey can be sent out in larger quantities and provide insight into the opinions and beliefs of the respondent mothers regarding the support they received prenatally and postpartum that assisted them with the role transition of being a mother and support for their breastfeeding. In a quantitative study, rates and outcomes can be monitored and tracked in correlation to how many months postpartum she is. Data such as how many mothers accessed a specific supportive service and if that group of mothers who utilized that service reported higher levels of confidence in their new maternal role, as well as the breastfeeding rates for the mothers who accessed that support. Data can be analyzed to see if certain supportive services facilitate a higher breastfeeding rate at four months postpartum.

Recently, researchers Frese and Nguyen wrote an article for the journey Advances in Nursing Science that analyzed the importance of MRA. When identifying if this article was an appropriate resource, it was evaluated for five criteria: currency, relevance, authority, accuracy, and purpose (CSU Chicago Librarians, 2022). Frese and Nguyen’s journal article provides current information because it was published this year. Their article is relevant because it provides essential information related to the topic of MRA, including the creation of MRA and MRA’s different stages. This article holds authority because the authors wrote it with higher education credentials, including Ph.D. and CNM, and the article was published in a reputable journal. This article is peer-reviewed, verifying the accuracy of the information provided. The purpose of Frese and Nguyen’s writing is clearly stated, objective, and impartial. There are no political, cultural, or religious biases within this journal. It is essential that this article meets this research criteria because it provides reassurance that it can be used as a reliable and credible resource for the assigned discussion topic or academic research paper.
