The Mexican Revolution (1910-20ish) is the most important event in the history of twentieth-century Mexico.
• What was this Revolution fought for (hint: three key articles in the Constitution of 1917: Anticlerical)?
Article 3: education reform: education should be secular, free, and obligatory.
Article 27: land reform: required lands seized illegally from peasants during Profiriatio to be restored. Also stated that only Mexicans (not foreigners) could own land.
Article 123: labor reform: 8 hour, six-day workweek, minimum wage, equal pay for equal work (regardless of sex or nationality). Also right to strike.
• Discuss whether or not the revolutionary promises were fulfilled. For example, Land Reform: was land reform carried out? If so, to what extent?
• Discuss Land Reform or lack therefore in the 21st century? Make sure and address all three key issues we discussed in our lectures.
