Overview
As ECE professionals, we understand that our success is dependent on partnerships with our students’ families and communities. You will create a presentation to parents introducing them to the major ideas of STEM teaching and learning for young children. The presentation will emphasize the importance of STEM learning at an early age, the power of parent attitudes about STEM concepts, and a call to action for parents.
Instructions
Create a way to strengthen your parent community’s understanding and involvement in STEM learning for their children. You can use PowerPoint, Prezi, PowToon, CanVisme, Zoho, Google Slides, Slide Dog, etc. You may use any presentation software as long as you can save it as a .pdf or .rtf file to submit to the Assignment Folder. Another option is to save it on the web and give me access to it so I will be able to grade it. You could also create a Podcast, a short Video, or a series of presentation handouts. You can choose whatever deliverable you think would be the most effective tool in reaching parents. If you have an idea but are uncertain if it would be acceptable for this assignment, send an email to your instructor and ask!
Your ‘reach out to parents’ should focus on the parents with children of a specific age group. Think about it, what you would say to the parents of infants and toddlers about STEM that would be different than what you would say to the parents of first grade children. If you currently work in the ECE field, please create this assignment for the parents of the children you work with. If you are not currently working in the field, then select an age group that you hope to work with in the future. Make it clear in your introduction what age children you are focusing on in your presentation.
Your presentation must include the following information:
What is STEM?
Why is STEM important education for all children?
What are the benefits of STEM exploring and learning for this age child?
What should parents be aware of regarding their attitudes about STEM learning? Why do they need to be aware? What does the research say about parent attitudes about a subject and student learning?
How can parents create a positive STEM environment at home?
Give parents at least 5 specific actions they could take to support their child’s growth in STEM understandings.
Provide parents with at least 3 resources for more information about STEM and their child.
