The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry

This is a short story written by writer O. Henry. This story talks about two main characters “Della” and “Jim”, the setting of the story is Christmas. The plot entails that both characters sacrificed something very special to them in order to get what they thought was the “perfect gift” for each other on Christmas Day. “Della’s” character was described as having long beautiful hair which her husband loved and cherished. Her husband “Jim” most cherished gift was an heirloom of gold watched passed through generations. They were described as not having much money from their jobs but they were both determined to spend what they had to ensure that on Christmas day the gift would be perfect. The Irony of this story is that “Della” sold her hair to buy a chain to attach to the watch her husband had and “Jim” sold the watch to buy a comb that Della wanted for a while to put in her hair. On Christmas day they were both surprised that the gifts they had for each other no longer served a purpose.

I chose this story because from personal experience sacrificing something that I hold dear to my heart thinking that I can get something better to gift someone I love when sometimes all they really need is me, just me as the gift. Another reason is when we have something that we consider not so important, someone else depends on that thing because it is important to them. You never know how much you mean to someone with the simplest gestures that you do. It may not be a big deal for you but to the other person, that quality is what may be carrying them through the day.
