The biggest community demographic that I did not know is that 96.5% of the students are classified as economically disadvantaged. A financial need is the second level, or “Security and Safety Needs” on Maslow’s Hierarchy. “Maslow believed that people have an inborn desire to be self-actualized, that is, to be all they can be. To achieve this ultimate goal, however, a number of more basic needs must be met.” (Cherry, 2022), which means that in order to achieve true motivating behavioral they must surpass all four levels and reach “Self-Actualization”. If students, are going home to a place where financial stability is the main concern, then how are they expected to reach a point where they are concerned with their personal growth? The answer is that these students and families, are primarily concerned with making ends meet, than mastering a class. There are instances where students reach level 5, however I believe this can only be accomplished if the Esteem level is met, and students feel respected and a personal worth. It means that we as educators need to be understanding to the emotional and physical being of our students. A few weeks, my campus created a cultural contract, and asked students what was one word, that would be the strongest word to use on our contracts, and the turnout was, that 98% of students said respect. Our student body wants to be respected, when pressed on their word, they responded with saying that respect is what would make them feel safe, loved, and included, which would ultimately lead to a better learning environment.

1.Since excellent curriculum leaders base their decisions on comprehensive and detailed information about the stressors that students confront in their homes and communities, share one of your demographic findings from your community that you did not know and is important for the school to know.
School leaders must comprehend the importance of recognizing background demographics of its school community when dissecting student data. Utilizing the information from segregated data will allow administrators to better support the student’s academic success on campus. According to the TAPR reports, it is evident that with the increased enrollment at my campus also comes an increased number of at-risk students. English learners, Special Education, and economically disadvantaged students at my campus are continuously increasing each year. According to UC Davis (2020), “Children growing up in economically disadvantaged contexts are at risk of underperforming academically” (para 1).
The use of special resources and programs will allow educators to better serve these populations. However, due to financial constraints, my campus has kept its staffing and program levels the same over the past few years. Therefore, the increase of at-risk students on campus is becoming problematic for educators to address the students educational needs. I have been working at my campus for over six years, and the increase in student population has started to become more apparent. Nevertheless, without reviewing the TAPR reports, the evidence of increased at-risk students could have gone undetected by the average educator. It is important that these demographics are recognized so that continuous improvement plans are centered around meeting the needs of diverse student learners.
2.In the article, Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs: Renovated with Contemporary Extensions, the authors rewrote Maslow’s hierarchy into their own model. Which one do you believe is the strongest and why?
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs theory is developed around understanding the true nature of human beings. The widely used pyramid of basic needs provides the foundation to Maslow’s theory on a person’s psychological and social needs (Cherry, 2022). Although the criticisms of Maslow’s theory occur due to individuals believing a hierarchy of needs do not exist, three additions to the original theory provide further insight to today’s practice. My personal view of the Aesthetic needs is something I see in many students on campus. Today’s society is very rich in the art of music, fashion, or creative expression. Many students may look beyond their social disparities and focus much of their time and efforts on aesthetic needs as it brings them joy and purpose. This appears to be the strongest human need because it comes from a place of passion and individualism, which a school seeks to develop each student into their own future committed successes.
Working in a middle school, I see a lot of students trying to find their true identities and explore what interests they have. I believe this is the strongest model because over the years, students have shifted from a more traditional upbringing to a superficial persona that has also decreased their level of maturity. For example, students who wear name-brand shoes tend to be among the group that brings increased levels of confidence as opposed to those who wear off-brand footwear. Even though the brand of attire should represent no indication of status quo or level of academic achievement, students’ visual representation tends to be a common factor in today’s classroom. Asides from their visual representation, students further contribute to Maslow’s Aesthetic Needs theory as they feel as though they can express their creativity in school work through the art of music. Students are often seen completing assignments faster when they are engaged in listening to their music of choice, rather than those who are restricted from listening while working. In sum, students have showcased a need to express their inner creativity as Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory supports, which is widely recognized by others through visual representations or other means of creative efforts.
