Technology and healthcare have started to evolve together beautifully. Technological advances have improved healthcare delivery in multitudinous ways, one of which being the way that healthcare professionals communicate with one another. An example of this is the utilization of mobile clinical communication technologies. Many hospitals in the U.S. and overseas have started to require their employees to communicate with one another by way of hospital-distributed mobile devices. Until recently, overhead hospital pages were the main way that healthcare workers contacted one another within the hospital. However, studies found that constant overhead announcements make for a noisy and stressful environment, which contribute to poor healing environments, poorer patient outcomes, and decreased hospital HCAHPS scores (George, 2022).
Mobile devices in the clinical setting have been shown to decrease medical errors, improve access to patient information, improve work productivity and efficiency, and lower failure-to-respond rates. In addition to this, healthcare workers who use mobile devices to communicate with one another can expedite real-time communications and help save patient lives (George, 2022).
In fact, as it stands now, 43% of physicians use their smartphone as the primary method of retrieving patient data. In addition to this, 84% of healthcare workers use their mobile device to assist in discharging patients, and 74% of hospitals that use mobile devices to collect data from patients are more efficient than those who do not (Leavy, 2019). It is clear that mobile devices are quickly becoming an essential part of healthcare technology, especially in the form of communication among healthcare workers.
