What major events and people influenced you during the years when you grew from age 5 to the present?

August 17, 2022
Christopher R. Teeple

For this assignment, you will suppose and pretend as if you are a 30-year-old Muslim male that grew up in the ghetto areas of Brooklyn, New York City. You had a rough childhood upbringing, growing up in a low-income home as the only child to a single parent mother. Your parents are originally from the country of Bangladesh but migrated to New York City in the early 1980s. Your parents became divorced when you were 6 years old, and your father left your mother and moved back to Bangladesh and eventually your father remarried another woman there. You were raised by your mother from the tender age of 6 years old to adulthood in a bad neighborhood in Brooklyn, NYC. Your mother worked a low-income job at a local rope-making factory, earning minimum wage. Your mother worked very hard to raise you as a single parent mother and give you the best opportunities available. Your mother is also a religious Muslim woman and as such you were raised with Muslim beliefs, but due to having a lack of an adult male figure such as a father, you began hanging out with bad kids in high school and joined a local street gang. Eventually, as you got older, you realized it was wrong and left the gang. You eventually decided to go back to school, specifically college, at 28 years old to get your college degree.

For the questions below, you will use your mother as the most important person that influenced you from the age of 5 to the present. You must discuss your parents divorce at the age of 6. You must discuss the positive values your mother instilled in you such as hard work, patience, doing the right thing, taking responsibility, being humble, getting an education, being a good person, giving back to your community, etc. Keep in mind you grew up in the 1990s, 2000s, 2010s and 2020 in New York City. You are from a Muslim family, and you and your mother faced discrimination and hardship during the September 11, 2001, World Trade Center attacks. Your neighbors called you a terrorist. And people treated you unfairly. And how this mistreatment instilled values of inclusion and diversity in you. Also keep in mind that you grew up in a very diverse area of New York City and that should be reflected in your outlooks and experience in life when answering the questions below. The major events that influenced you were your mother, and the major events are your parents divorced, your mother working a low-income to raise you, you completing elementary school, your completing high school, the 9/11 attacks, and going back to college at 28 years old.

Throughout life in our various roles, our behavior, and decisions we make, the choices we select and our view of others and ourselves are often based on our values and interests which are influenced, even shaped, by the events and people in our lives. Understanding ourselves and others in the terms of this dynamic context can be helpful to us in learning how to manage ourselves, teams, organizations, the future, ambiguity, and change. Therefore, please prepare a memo (about 3 pages) concerning the following:

1. What major events and people influenced you during the years when you grew from age 5 to the present? (1 page)
2. How are your experiences of events and people reflected in the values, interests, and actions of your generation regarding diversity and inclusion? (1 page)
3. How do your views of diversity and inclusion relate to your expectations, behavior, and decisions you and your generation make at work? (1 page)

Please type your responses double line spacing, 12-point font, preferably Arial or Tahoma typeface. Proofread your paper The paper should be free of any mistakes in grammar and English syntax. The paper should be no less than 3 pages and be original work. I expect this to be a well-written and well-reasoned paper.
