The four-year DMD program and curriculum at Penn Dental Medicine not only reflect a strong commitment to developing knowledge and skills in both oral science and oral health care but also offers the flexibility for students to tailor their education to their professional interests and goals. As one of 12 schools within the University of Pennsylvania, Penn Dental Medicine is uniquely positioned geographically and philosophically to encourage a depth of opportunities for interdisciplinary study across other professional disciplines. Here, students find an education that builds excellence in dental medicine by encouraging individual interests and strengths to flourish and grow. The DMD program offers:
• Funded dual-degree options in education, bioethics, bioengineering, public health, business administration, and law.
• Honors programs in research, clinical dentistry, community health, radiological sciences, and oral and maxillofacial surgery, among others.
• A depth of comprehensive clinical experiences with a diverse patient base, instilling wide exposure to cases and care across specialties. Students begin gaining hands-on clinical experience the first year through a vertical clinical program, assigned to a primary care unit with students from all four classes and assigned faculty and continuing with that group through all four years of clinical training.
• Community outreach and service learning with oral health promotion and clinical care experiences in varied extramural settings throughout Philadelphia.
• The Special Care Center for Persons with Disabilities, the only center of its kind where students and faculty provide comprehensive care for individuals with physical and/or cognitive limitations in a brand new specially designed clinic.
• Hands-on research opportunities in both the basic and clinical sciences, through the School’s Summer Student Research Program.
• Summer community oral health projects through Bridging the Gaps.
• A summer fellowship in collaboration with the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics and the Health Care Management Department of the Wharton.
• Support and mentorship programs through the Office of Career Counseling.
• A vertical didactic program across all four years which integrates basic and clinical sciences to create a foundation for lifelong learning
• Financial aid resources.
