Malingering is a real concern in forensic settings. Therefore, many instruments have been developed to assist with detecting malingering. The focus of this assigned article is how well two instruments developed to detect malingering can do so, and whether coaching can assist with successful malingering.
First, acquire and read the article:
Veltri, C. O. C., & Williams, J. E. (2013). Does the disorder matter? investigating a moderating effect on coached noncredible overreporting using the MMPI-2 and PAI. Assessment, 20(2), 199-209. doi:http://dx.doi.org.ezproxylocal.library.nova.edu/10.1177/1073191112464619
Then, after reading the article, answer the following questions:
This experiment used a repeated measures design. What were the advantages to this design?
What is the most important threat to internal validity for this study and justify your answer? (textbook has a listing of each type of threat)
In what ways does this study reflect-or not reflect-the reality of malingering in a forensic setting? That is, how would you evaluate the external validity of this study?
What were the researchers’ main conclusions of this experiment?
What are the applications of these results to a forensic setting?
