Redlining is a type of systemic racism. This occurs when the system denies certain goods or services to certain sectors. This may occur when there are two communities that live close by, with one including those who are less fortunate or people of color. Schools may be overcrowded, with under paid staff as well as limited activities. The other school with those who have a higher income will include less crowding, better pay for teachers, and plenty of activities available. These may seem like two separate worlds, but this is how systemic racism happens. Redlining is when government agencies draw a map that blocks off black neighborhoods from denying them services based on their race. Banks can also refuse to help them from buying homes in certain areas. This doesn’t affect those who are not black or those with high income. Redlining affects home values greatly due to homes in black areas being less “wanted”If blacks did have the chance to move to a better area or get a better education white flight would occur. This is when people who are white begin to leave areas that are more diverse than their liking. When this happens, the neighborhood or area eventually becomes an area for those of color which is eventually seen as undesirable. This eventually affects education, health, policing, and wealth since they are not funded as much.”. It affects students who try to apply for schools or scholarships. Studies have shown that resumes that sound “white” get double the amount of interview requests. It has also shown in unemployment rates, with blacks having double the amount of unemployment rate than whites. This can be changed if system funding is equally distributed. When it comes to health, black women are less likely to be taken seriously about their complaints. In fact, I have had many black women tell me that they were not treating anywhere equal to white woman during labor. Their concerns were dismissed most of the time and they would not receive as much pain medication as others would. Policing is also affected when it comes to law enforcement. In black areas, cops are more likely to be suspicious of certain activities and use force during confrontation. This is something we have seen often on the new the past couple of years. The wealth is also affected in a way where those who are black are not given equal opportunities as to those who are white. This eventually holds them back in life and eventually results in them not being able to get a stable job that pays well.
