The so-called “Freedom Convoy” began in B.C.’s Lower Mainland and traversed the country before converging in Ottawa on Jan. 29. At first, convoy organizers used the crowdfunding website GoFundMe to collect donations. Then, they migrated fundraising efforts to GiveSendGo. A group of hackers illegally targeted GiveSendGo and leaked the donor data online. The leaked data contains donors’ full names, email addresses, postal codes, donation amounts, methods of payment and personal comments. While the data was illegally obtained, public media – CBC -, private media – the Globe and Mail – and even alternative media – The Tyee – chose to publish some general findings.
Read the Tyee’s article (Links to an external site.) and answer the following questions. Is this leaked reported on endangering personal privacy? Is it legal? Is it justified? Are there problems or bias in the way this story has been reported? What interests are being served? At whose expense? In the future, would you feel at ease funding anti-establishment campaigns via crowdfunding websites? (300 words)
