Punk might be considered the anti-fashion music. At the same time, there was a message in both the dress style and the musical style of punk. With the advent of MTV, rock moved to the other extreme and became enormously glamor- and fashion-conscious. This lesson has charted a fairly extreme shift in fashion and message from punk to the MTV stable of bands. This is not the first time such a shift has occurred. After you have completed your research, submit your response to the following questions:
Looking back over the history we have studied so far in this course, where do you see parallel historical shifts between the rock of popular culture (both image and music) and the rock of social and political consciousness?
Which of these two rock identities do you think will be the rock we read about in the twenty-fifth century?
Is rock too close to short-lived fashion to ever be an art form? Will it always shift its focus to the most current youth generation? Is it an art form for youth alone? Use your research to support your position. Be sure to cite your sources.
