Use third person when writing academic papers.
Avoid using I, my, or me. Instead of writing: I like this story because… Use: This story catches the reader’s attention by… However:
You may use I when sharing a personal anecdote or, in the case of this unit, you choose to share an insight. If you choose to read “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas”. You may want to share what you would do if you were a resident of Omelas.
Literary analysis papers are generally written in first person. Instead of writing: The story illustrated many examples symbolism. Write: The story illustrates many examples of symbolism.
Avoid sharing your process as in: I had to read this poem three times before I understood it. Instead you could write, The symbolism in the poem is revealed through imagery.
