I am precepting a new nurse to the Emergency department and we have to fill out weekly updates on her progress. We are on week 8 so this update is considered the “midterm” for this paper 1. what is going well for resident? 2. what does the resident need to work on the most? SMART GOALS? 3. How is the resident problem solving and verbalizing strategies for patient care? provide examples.
Things that are going well for resident: skills documentation team work communication with team (doctors nurses techs RT ect) medication administration delegating task when appropriate
Things that needs work: time management (spending to much time in patients room) prioritization (worrying about less critical tasks) clustering care (being about to think ahead of time what its will need based upon complaint and getting things done all at once vs going in and out of room) — i need SMART goals
Problem solving/verbalizing strategies for pt care: she still needs to work on this by building self confidence within ER patient population.
EX: feeling more confident on the care she provides in the ER. She is always really nervous and not sure in handling such patient population (from all aspects of care) …..”she is stuck on I’ve been and OB nurse for this amt of time I have no idea what I am doing here this is all new”
She did surprise me and took complete control (after I gave her a little push and boost of confidence) with this ETOH withdrawal which great… she advocated and followed through care until end of shift.
