Mark Cuban has stated TikTok is going to takeover sport media (Links to an external site.). Social media has definitively proven that it is here to stay and is, in many ways, the future of sports media. How does social media shape the message around sports? What role does it play in the communication process between stakeholders (e.g. fans) and organizations? How is the message on social media shaping the narrative around sport and sport communication in ways that we’ve never seen before?
I think about the instantaneous nature of communication given access to social media. We have seen the human cause of this instantaneous ability to communicate with athletes finding out they were released or traded on Twitter (Links to an external site.). From the standpoint of communication, great…your fanbase knows a trade was completed and that the dynamics of the roster have changed in just about real-time. From the athlete standpoint, psychologically how does it affect an athlete’s mentality being the last to know they will be changing jobs? Just one example but a lot to talk about regarding social media and its positives and negatives…and unknowns.
