Often leadership is confused as the act or possession of a single person in a single position of authority, but in Scripture, we see a different emphasis. Power is to be shared among many. Leaders share power with followers and, moreover, develop and recognize the unique gifts and contributions of followers as a means of being a servant. Teams work together to prevent myopia and arrogance in decision-making and to ensure that people’s rights are acknowledged and accounted for.
To lead this way requires humility and an understanding of how Christ acted and cared for others. But, at a very deep heart level, it requires brokenness and amazement at what God has done for us through Christ—to be broken by the sense that God loved us enough to die for our sins and to draw us to Him, which by all rights should be a staggering and mystifying thought. If Christ was willing to do that for us, why wouldn’t we in turn be willing to serve and empower others?
