Which subject, grade level, and standard did you select?

June 2, 2022
Christopher R. Teeple

part 1
Decide on a subject that you would like to explore from the following: Arts, Comprehensive Health, Physical Education, Reading, Writing and Communicating, Math, Science, Social Studies, Computer Science, or World Languages.

Follow these steps on the Colorado Academic Standards website:

Click on the blue Colorado Academic Standards link above in the assignment instructions.
Then click on “Select Content Area” and select a subject of your choice.
Then click on “Select Grade level” and select a grade level of your choice.
Then click on “All Standard Categories” and select All Standard Categories.
After this you should click on the little box with the “+” sign in it, then you should see the standards for what you have selected.
Then scroll down slowly to get an idea of how many standards address the subject you selected.
Thoroughly read through one specific standard for that grade level. (Click on down arrow to expand the standard.)
Answer the following questions in a one-page written reflection:

Which subject, grade level, and standard did you select?
Could a teacher address the standards through fun activities rather than relying on drills, written assignments, homework, and rote memory tactics? How? Give an example or provide researched information to explain this.
How could the assignments and activities be adapted for children with varying abilities?
Do you think that having so many standards is helpful for teachers who are faced with preparing children for standardized testing? Explain why you think this.

part2
Use the Attention and Distraction Handout to conduct an experiment on Attention/Distraction.
Write a paper from information and data gathered from the experiment. This paper should include the following:
Briefly describe the characteristics of the participants (e.g., age, gender, grade level).
Provide the details of the participants’ performance (e.g., speed, accuracy, possible difficulties, anomalies, etc.).
Incorporating information-processing theory, explain why the younger individual took longer to sort the cards than the older individual. If your finding was different, explore the possible reasons.
Submit your written paper to the M5 Assigment 1: Attention & Distraction assigment folder by the due date.
