PhotoVoice is a research method in which researchers and community members co-produce knowledge. The linked short films depict two FIU PhotoVoice Projects: Neighborhoods of Refuge (Links to an external site.), which examines how neighborhoods address homelessness https://online.fiu.edu/videos?vpvid=690ba0dd-eadf-48ef-a2f0-2d43591d3d00 (a project led by Dr. Marr); and Mi Vida con VIH/My Life with HIV https://online.fiu.edu/videos?vpvid=8b246a4e-d400-48b1-8010-44dfd39e3207 (led by Dr. Mark Padilla of GSS), which explores what it is like to live with HIV. After watching one of the films, respond to one of the following prompts:
PICK ONE FILM AND ONE PROMPT!
Press Release: Imagine that you are the publicist in charge of writing the press release for one of the films. What can you tell the public about the film, PhotoVoice as a research method, and the topics discussed? Since it is a press release, be sure to convince the public that they must watch the film you are promoting.
Movie Review: Imagine that a newspaper has asked you to write a movie review about one of the films. In writing your review, consider whether or not the film is successful in the task it attempts: can it have an impact on combating the issues it portrays? Why or why not? Include your personal thoughts on the film, as well as on PhotoVoice as a research tool.
