The Topic
The 1950s, 1960s and 1970s were a period of dramatic change for the United States both domestically and internationally. Coming out of both World Wars and a Great Depression, the United States had risen to become a global power. There was greater globalization of the economy, conflict about government ideology and a unification of culture domestically.
While some events were painstakingly planned, others were quick and reactionary. All have consequences, though some are more consequential than others. Some consequences can be measured in immediate impacts like loss of life, impacts or property, while others may be longer lasting like legislative change or societal norms.
Research Topic and Question
Consider the following types of larger frameworks:
● How did innovation alter American society in the second half of the 20th century?
● Assess the extent to which civil disobedience leads to significant change in the second half of the 20th century?
● How does American diplomacy shape the notion of being American?
For your essay, you will be expected to answer the following question:
● Assess three (3) significant causes of the event.
● Assess three (3) significant effect of the event.
Requirements
● use a variety of sources, such as:
o primary sources, including a variety of maps, photographs, journals, letters and diaries, historical newspapers, speeches, pieces of legislation, treaties, songs, etc.
o secondary sources, such as academic journals, books, maps, newspaper articles
● adhere to the following standards:
o Be entirely written using Teams.
▪ Your final version must include the evolution of your writing in its entirety using “revision history”
o Length: 3-4 pages (roughly 1000-1250 words)
▪ this does not include the title page, footnotes or bibliography
o Formatting: Chicago Style Formatting (cover page, page number, double spaced, Times New Roman Font, 12 point font size, etc.)
o Citation format: Chicago Manual of Style (not MLA)
