Week 5: Discussion Board
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2020), a traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a disruption in the normal function of the brain that can be caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head, or penetrating head injury. Between 2000-2019, U. S. service members reported 414,000 TBIs, while 185,000 veterans using Veterans’ Administration (VA) services have been diagnosed with at least one TBI (Office of Research and Development, n. d.). Similar injuries have been found in some athletes. Though most TBIs were classified as mild, TBI and related comorbidities constitute a significant cause of disability, especially for individuals who’ve experienced more than one TBI. Receiving multiple concussions can lead to the development of progressive neurodegenerative conditions, including chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and Parkinson disease. Reflect on this health concern and address the following:
1. Discuss challenges associated with diagnosing and treating mild to moderate TBIs.
2. What impact could providing care for an individual with a TBI have on caregivers?
3. Describe possible ethical considerations associated with the risk of TBI for military personnel? Do these differ from the considerations for athletes? Why or why not?
4. What healthcare and community resources are available for patients with TBIs? What support can AGPCNPs provide to patients and families living with the effects of a TBI?
Please use the articles below as the 2 of the resources to answer the questions.
