Write 1,500 words (or more) analyzing 3 examples of Mongolian music.
Prompt: How is the tension between “tradition” (i.e. folk genres) and “modern” (i.e. international popular forms) reflected in the development of Mongolian music in the 20th century? If you were speaking to someone who knew nothing about Mongolia, which three (or more) examples of Mongolian music would you select to represent Mongolian music? Why?
To answer this question, you can choose from any music or music video we have discussed in class including those we have written about in class AND you must include at least one piece of Mongolian music or a Mongolian music video that we have not written about. The latter includes music we discussed in class but didn’t write about or something from outside of class that you found on YouTube or another source.
Consider the time in which the music was produced and any social and political influences on the music.
Consider the content of the lyrics (where possible) and how it supports your answer.
Focus on the period from 1950 to the present, with at least two examples of post-1990s music.
The essay must have the following elements:
Introduction including a thesis statement (What is your point?)
Three examples, including images (stills from a music video, band or performer photos, screenshot from a movie) of Mongolian music that support your thesis.
A concluding paragraph restating (but not repeating) your main idea
Formatting:
Include a cover page with your name, date of submission, and title of essay (the title is not graded, “Writing Milestone 2” is acceptable, or you can give your writing a more creative title)
Do not include a header
Do not put your name, date, and title anywhere in the document except the cover page, the essay should begin on line one of the page following the cover page
Do include page numbers (on most word processors you need to use the “Insert” function, and then “page numbers,” and then select the numbers that are centered on the bottom of the page)
Use Times New Roman, 12pt font, double spaced throughout (I will subtract one point for incorrect font layout)
Indent all paragraphs with standard indentations (if you are using a standard American English keyboard layout in the appropriate font/style, pushing the “Tab” button once on your keyboard will give you a standard indentation)
Make sure your sentences all end with a period
Pro-tip: if you are using Microsoft Office, there is a “proofing” function that will help you identify (some, but not all) passive voice sentences: go to File –> Options –> Proofing –> find the “spelling and grammar” section and click “Settings” –> scroll down to “Clarity” and tick the boxes for “Passive Voice” and “Passive Voice with Unknown Actor” (and then make sure that the grammar check function is “on” when you’re proofreading)
How is the tension between “tradition” (i.e. folk genres) and “modern” (i.e. international popular forms) reflected in the development of Mongolian music in the 20th century?
