Read and Annotate George Orwell’s essay “Politics and the English Language”
We’re going to annotate George Orwell’s essay together.
I’ve turned it into a google doc, and I want you to use the Comment feature to add your own annotations. To do this, you highlight the line or passage that you want to comment on, and then click the little + sign to add your comment. You can also comment on each other’s comments, of course.
To figure out what to annotate, use these letters to correspond with your comment
A = Agree
D = Disagree
C = Confusing
I = Interesting
In other words, you’ll begin your comment with the appropriate letter (A,D,C, or I) and then explain what you mean. You must add at least five annotations throughout the document. *Please note that these annotations will count for 2 discussions (4 points total)
Because there are so many of us, which would make the document too crowded with your comments, I am splitting you up into two groups.

In his essay, “Politics and the English Language,” Orwell writes that the language of the powerful is designed “to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.” What do you think he means by this? And can you think of anything in our world now that this applies to? Please be specific, using your own words, and proofread your work carefully.
