Your work and/or life experiences have exposed you to a variety of organizations, where you have observed, intuitively absorbed, and critically analyzed how organizations function – both positively and negatively. In this three-fold course project, you will take your informal organizational assessment to the next level by conducting a structured and cultural analysis of an organization.
Select an organization in which YOU are (or have been) an employee, a volunteer, or a member (e.g. churches, boy scouts, etc.).
Be sure to choose a whole organization, NOT simply a department of the organization.
Make sure you know enough about the inner workings of the organization that you can effectively analyze it.
NOTE: Although the most ideal way to conduct an organization assessment is to get thorough and comprehensive input from all key stakeholders, for this assignment, you are to conduct this assessment without additional input. In other words, your input will be the sole data point.
You will complete a structured organizational analysis by completing three parts, as follows:
Part One – A Structural Analysis (Due in Module 3)
Analyze the organizational structure of a company of your choice, and include comments about the following:
Vision & Mission
Structure (size, location(s), functions, span of control)
Core Policies & Processes
Talent Management
Employee demographic representation
How organizational policies and practices (learning & development, rewards & recognition, benefits, etc.) have been developed to appeal to a diverse employee base
What organizational cultural indicators exist to demonstrate respect for the uniqueness of employees
Write a narrative report with introduction and conclusion that highlights the organization.
Avoid judgment and opinion; just state the facts, as you are able to observe them.
You should use your own observations, which you may supplement with information from annual reports, the internet site, brochures, published reports, informal discussions with key people (if available and convenient).
NOTE: You are not expected or required to complete formally developed interviews in this assignment.
Your Part One – Structural Analysis narrative should primarily describe what exists in the organization.
