Levels of Prevention
It is important to perform a thorough physical examination along with questioning when evaluating a new lump in breast tissue. The first question would center around asking the patient if they have noticed any discharge from her nipple as this can correlate with some forms of breast cancer (Daly & Puckett, 2021). The second question concerns when she found the mass and if it has changed in size. If a lump is found to be growing or changing in size, key insights into a tumor’s characteristics can be gained (Daly & Puckett, 2021).
Risk Factors
Risk factors for breast cancer can be grouped into two categories, ones that you can change and ones that you cannot change. A risk factor related to the non-modifiable category would be family history. A family history of breast can increase the risk that the patient may develop it (CDC, 2021). A second risk factor to assess for centers around alcohol intake. According to the CDC (2021), increased intake of alcohol correlates with increased risk of breast cancer development.
Levels of Prevention
If it is found that this patient does not have cancer, the focus of prevention centers around primary. Primary prevention includes reducing the chances of developing breast cancer before it is present and would include certain lifestyle modifications like not smoking, limiting alcohol intake, getting regular exercise, and eating a healthy diet (Anthis & Kavanaugh, 2020). Secondary prevention focuses on screening and early detection, which would include performing regular self-breast exams and getting mammograms (Anthis & Kavanaugh, 2020).

What are two questions you would ask this patient?
Do you have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer?
How long ago did you notice the lump in your right breast, and have you noticed and inverted nipple or any discharge?
What are two risk factors would you want to assess for?
Previous treatment using radian therapy. According to the CDC, women who had previous radiation therapy within the chest area before the age of 30 may have a higher risk of getting breast cancer throughout their lives (What Are the Risk Factors for Breast Cancer?, 2021).
Being overweight after menopause. Copious amounts of fat tissue increases the likelihood of developing breast cancer due to the increase of estrogen (Simon, 2018).
What are the levels of prevention for this patient?
According to the American Cancer Society, avoiding alcohol completely decreases the likelihood of developing breast cancer. It is recommended that if a woman chooses to consume alcohol, it should be no more than one drink a day (ACS Medical Content and News Staff, 2020). Also maintain a healthy diet and weight through clean eating and physical activity decreases the likelihood of developing breast cancer.
