General Instruction
In both Economics and Sociology the dynamics of markets are strongly connected to which assumptions of man are used. In fact, we cannot understand market theories without looking more carefully into the assumptions of humanity that underlie these theories. In this semester, we have been learning markets through the assumption of social man, and also contrasting the assumption of social man with that of economic man. This essay asks you to synthesize what we have learned in this semester concerning markets. In specific, the essay must discuss the following three questions: what motivate people, how do markets work, and how are markets structured.
This is a formal essay, prepared for a reader who is looking at your paper as she would a formal essay. Like any good essay, your essay should develop a thesis/argument, support it with specific evidence, and present both ideas and evidence in clear language and a logical order.
Essay Prompt
The essay has to have six parts:
(1) Introduction,
(2) what a market is,
(3)what motivate people,
(4) how do markets work,
(5) how are markets structured–power relations,
(6) conclusion. You at least need to have one paragraph per part. For the middle (3) to (5), you may have more than one paragraph. In introduction, you may briefly summarize what you have learned in this class, or what this course, markets and course, is about. To adequately address (3) to (5), make sure that you use appropriate and sufficient examples to support your analysis. You will gain more points by contrasting perspectives of economic sociology with that of mainstream economics.
If you choose not to do comparison, you need to focus on perspectives of economic sociology. If you write a paper based on the free market theory, you will receive an F. (Remember this is a course of economic sociology, not economics.) At the end, conclude the essay with the most significant/striking/useful idea(s) that you have learned from the course.

No mandatory length, yet a minimum 5-page is advised. Papers that are short than 5-page are most likely to receive D or lower grade.

Be sure to cite your sources. If you copy the whole sentence without quotation marks it is plagiarism.
Except for definition, you should avoid long quotes. Instead, paraphrase the original sentences into your own words, and cite the sentences accordingly.
Do not take ideas from other sources found on the internet
Final Reminder
Introduction & Conclusion: Your paper needs to have an introduction and a conclusion.
Although you don’t need to use footnotes, when you mention the assigned reading, you need to either paraphrase the original sentences or use direct quotes. Except for definitions, you should avoid long quotes. You may use ASA or APA style for citation.
When citing from the assigned readings, the in-text citation for ASA is as following: put author, year of publication, and page numbers in parenthesis. Ex. (Carruthers and Babb 2013:52).
There is no need to refer to outside sources for this assignment. However, if you do use outside sources, make sure you cite it appropriately.
You need to have a reference page at the end of the paper using either ASA or APA style.
You will earn more points by using a wide variety of examples and demonstrating that you mastered the course materials. Do not simply rely on one or two reading. Do not simply list things word for word from the assigned articles. Do not copy from the lecture slides. You should take the time to present the materials in a thoughtful organized fashion, and in your own words.
Be sure to edit and spell check. You will lose points for the quality of the writing.
Be very careful to avoid plagiarism. Do not use words or ideas from the internet, from any publication, or from the work of another student without citing the source. Also, if you use more than three words in a row from any source, those words must be enclosed in quotation marks.
