I have family in California and we always go at it in regards to the cost of living between Texas and California, we always compare our housing markets vs pay and why so many people are moving from there to here. My cousin always says that the reason Texans do not like California is because its to expensive and I always counter that our average 250K homes are bigger than his 470k out there. Some of the information I presume could help either of us in backing up our claims is some analytical data on Californians moving here per 100K population, median cost of commercial goods , median cost of building materials, average homes sales , resale value and such to really be able to dig deep into which state is best for living. It really boils down to preference, But when I moved here from Chicago I spent some time looking at the job market, the housing market , oil and gas trends and potential equity growth for home buying and it really was not hard decision to move here from Illinois, especially leaving a declining job market and higher tax rate for a good job market and no state tax
Emily’s reponse: Statistics are used all over the world for so many different reasons. Let’s pretend we are talking about the cost of living statistics for a moment. If someone said “‘State A’ has the lowest cost of living,” you might ask what states they were comparing for the initial question. You might also ask about breaking it down into smaller statistics for the average house price, average grocery price, or even the average salary. You might also ask if the person researched before stating their statistics. Looking for the median cost overall would help ensure that the statistics are correct from the person. It is important to ask what all states they compared to get their answer from as well.
