A life-long mutual adaptation process between children, their caregivers, and the entire social environment is initiated with the child’s birth. According to Schore, J., & Schore, A. (2007), interactions’ patterns and relationships formed during life’s early phases function as a model for later interactions about life and always have long-lasting effects. Consequently, a child’s mindset development is through his/her initial relationship with their parents of those interactions of the neurobiology of the infant (Berzoff, J., Flanagan, L., & Hertz, P. (2021). In other words, parents reflect on their children what is going on in the child’s inner world to help them see the internal world. According to Daniel J. Siegel (2001), a child’s mind gets distorted when they cannot get proper feedback from their caregivers, who are their mothers. This comes when the caregiver is, in most cases, distant, emotionally, or disturbing. Anita divorced her husband ten years ago when her 13-year-old boy was 3. Anita spent most of her life in physical abuse by her husband when children were in infancy stages. On the contrary, as described from the case study, the environment plays a significant role in the child’s behavior; under-resourced public school, and an environment that reflects challenges facing the nearby region, including community violence, poverty, and illegal and legal substance abuse and other life experience occurrences. The child’s attachment relationship is thus, the cause for what he is going through.
It appears that Anita’s son is struggling with his mental illness, which adverse childhood experiences and trauma may have caused. According to the text, when a developing child is exposed to stress or adversity and lacks contingently responsive care due to own capacity, the endocrine response system will become activated, altering the child’s brain and cause other risks for adverse developmental outcomes (Berzoff, J., Flanagan, L., & Hertz, P. (2021). Consequently, many Social Workers will need to collaborate with the parents/ caregivers to provide supportive interventions to promote someone like Anita to aid her children’s development. Since Anita and her children are attached emotionally, it is best to focus on Anita as the primary caregiver to assist with the intervention process. Since Anita has experienced so much trauma in her lifespan from childhood to adulthood, she will be the best candidate to collaborate in treatment with her children after focusing on her history through neurobiological framework. In this case, it is also essential to focus on changing a caregiver’s relationship life with the child to promote a healthy attachment and relationship.
