The goal of is this part is to gain experience in describing and analyzing the distribution of a health problem in a population, and become familiar with various sources of data for the epidemiologic descriiption of a health problem.
Step 1: Select a health problem to explore in detail, using a descriiptive epidemiologic approach.
Step 2: Identify a Data Source. Choose one of the following sources of data that will allow you to present the descriiptive epidemiology of the health problem by person, place, and time.
Step 3: Become familiar with the online data system, which you have selected (feel free to explore the other one as well). Make sure you understand how the data are collected and how to generate tables and graphs that illustrate the descriiptive epidemiology of your chosen health problem.
Step 4: Generate a data presentation that describes the health problem. Be creative about how best to present your data.
Step 5. Write a brief report (300 words) on the health problem and upload graphs/ tables as images, making sure to include the following:
Begin with a descriiption of the magnitude of the health problem. (1-2 sentences, with a citation as needed)
Describe how your data are collected, who is responsible for data collection and provide the website that you used. (2-3 sentences) Hint: Look under Data Notes or FAQs or background to find the details.
Present your findings including one table or graph for each characteristic (person, place and time): 3 tables/graphs total with titles. Describe any differences/variation that you observe in the data by person, place, and time. This can be done in bullet points or in short paragraph form.
Identify at least one research hypothesis that could be pursued based upon your consideration of these descriiptive data.
