Read the following report: Cologon, K. (2019) Towards inclusive education: A necessary process of transformation. Report written by Dr Kathy Cologon, Macquarie University for Children and Young People with Disability Australia (CYDA). In chapter one of the report (pages 3-5), Cologon (2019) outlines a number of issues or barriers to inclusion and inclusive education. Select one of these issues or barriers and read and research more about the issue.
You will prepare position paper advocating an appropriate and thoughtful response to the selected issue or barrier in relation to primary education. The submission will take the form of a position paper and have 3 aligned components: your position around the issue or barrier, a justification for this position and two recommendations around how this might be improved. The paper will clearly state your position (this is what it should look like/happen to address the issue or barrier), justification (this is why this is the right way forward) and two specific recommendations (this is what needs to be done to achieve this position).
– Your tone will be formal using an active voice. Avoid a passive tone and personal pronouns.
– Use inclusive terminology (person-first) and Australian English. – You are not writing an essay or an opinion piece. You will need to demonstrate an understanding of the key issue or barrier and critically analyse the current literature, so that you can take a thoughtful stance.
Write a statement, that reflects your position, and then justify your position by elaborating on the key issues, referencing the literature to support your argument. Your recommendations will align with your position statement and justification.
– When undertaking your research ensure your references are current (the majority should be less than 5 years old), mostly Australian; relevant to primary education context; and peer reviewed literature and not websites.
– The word count of 1,500 words includes in-text referencing but NOT the reference list.
– Format your paper using the APA 7th edition and style guide, . include a title, use line spacing, size 12 Arial font. You can use headings (Position, Justification, Recommendations)
– Use APA 7 Referencing Style Guide to format your in-text references and reference list.
– Edit your work carefully paying close attention to paragraphing, grammar, syntax and punctuation.
There are 4 sections to your paper:
1. Your position: In a clear statement of 1-3 sentences identify your position. The statement explains what you think should happen, much like an outcome, it states the best case scenario. You are identifying concisely what you think is the best option to address your selected issue or barrier. (Approx. 250 words)
2. Justification: In this section you are justifying why you have taken this position. This is where you explain what is/is not working, what could be done better and why. Your argument should be logically aligned and supported by the literature: this is the problem is why it is a problem is what needs to change this is why. Your justification will then align to your recommendations. (Approx. 850 words)
3. Recommendations: You will make two clear and specific evidence-based recommendations. What innovative ideas do you have that would lead to change? Your recommendations will be aligned with your position; linked to the issue or barrier you discussed in your justification; referenced to and supported by current research; clear, specific and detailed enough that the government can implement the changes you are suggesting. Avoid broad, generalised statements or strategies that are already being implemented. (Approx. 500 words)
4. References: Use a minimum of 5 current academic journal articles or texts. At least one of your references should be the textbook: Graham, . (Ed.). (2020). Inclusive education for the 21st century: Theory, policy and practice. Allen & Unwin.
Please include a reference list at the end of the paper using APA 7th edition and APA 7th edition in-text referencing.
