This is not an essay; do not include an introduction and conclusion. Simply complete the two components below. In 2.5-3.5 pages write a critical analysis that:
Briefly summarizes the documentary/ies in 2-4 sentences (one paragraph)
Evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of the documentary/ies for understanding issues of racialization and society
GUIDELINES:
The majority of your paper should focus on critical assessment. Do not simply summarize the content. To evaluate the documentary, consider the following:
Did the documentary seem to have an overall point of view, or purpose?
What kinds of sources are used to communicate the main points?
Are there other possible positions on this issue or topic? Are there concepts, ideas and voices that are unclear or inadequately presented? Is pertinent information omitted? If so why is it relevant?
Were some elements or sources more effective or convincing than others?
How does the documentary correspond to or differ from what you’ve learned from other sources on this subject matter?
How does the documentary advance our understanding of the issues?
What point or part did you find particularly relevant or important and why?
What is your overall reaction to the documentary and why?
Does the documentary disrupt dominant knowledge and if so why does this matter?
How does the documentary relate to the course readings (does it bring forth new information or provide different insights, for example)?
Referencing:
Use may cite direct quotes from the documentary. If you do name the person who stated the words and cite the documentary title and year, e.g. ““as stated by ____ in the documentary, “ _________”” (The Skin We’re In, 2017).
Grading:
Your paper will be graded on your ability to succinctly summarize the documentary, your assessment of the overall strengths and weaknesses of the documentary and the quality of your writing. An A paper will be insightful, concise and yet thorough, well-organized, and free of spelling and grammatical errors.
