Graded Discussion: Population Dynamics
For this discussion, you will generate and compare population pyramids between countries and/or over time. To begin, visit https://www.census.gov/data-tools/demo/idb/#/country?YR_ANIM=2021 (Links to an external site.) and follow the instructions below:
Select years and countries on the left side of the screen:
To view temporal changes for a single population, choose 1 country and then hold ‘Ctrl’ to select multiple years. For example, 1950, 1955, 1960, …, 2015, 2020, 2025
To view differences between 2 different populations, choose 1 year and then hold ‘Ctrl’ to select multiple countries. For example, Afghanistan and the US
Click Submit
If you selected multiple years for 1 country, you can click the ‘play’ symbol near the top of results to view an animation of the pyramid over time!

Discussion Requirements:
Copy/Paste the URL from your pyramid results.
Describe the results you have generated. For example, how a population changed over time, or key differences across multiple countries.
Suggest some explanations for observed changes over time or between countries
Finally, what do you think the morbidity/mortality profile might look like for the country or countries you selected?
Grading Requirements:
Everyone must create 1 original post (as described above) and reply to at least 1 post from a classmate. You will not be able to see your classmates’ posts until you post your own.
Your grade will be assessed on the following 3-point scale:
Provocative (3/3) – Response meets stated requirements and also attempts to stimulate further thought and discussion, is relevant to epidemiology and concepts learned in class, and is respectful of others’ posts
Substantial (2/3) – Response meets stated requirements but does not stimulate further analysis/discussion of the subject or is less relevant to epidemiology and concepts learned in class
Superficial (1/3) – Response does not meet all stated requirements, provides obvious information without further analysis of the concept, lacks depth of knowledge or reasoning, or has very little relevance to epidemiology and concepts learned in class
None (0/3) – Response is not complete or is not respectful of others’ posts
